Accounting for small businesses

Accounting that tells you where the business stands

Financial statements you can read, a year-end close you do not dread, and someone to explain what the numbers mean, so decisions are not made on a hunch.

  • Based in Avenel, New Jersey
  • A person reviews the work before it is filed or sent
  • Plain-English answers, not jargon

Who this is for

Owners who want more than a tax return

You want to know whether the business is actually making money, where it goes, and what to expect before the year ends.

Businesses with books that are already current

Bookkeeping is under control and you want someone to review it, produce statements from it, and act on what it shows.

Owners preparing for a lender, partner or buyer

Clean statements and a clear story behind them, prepared before someone else asks for them.

What we handle

Profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow statements prepared from your books, on the schedule we agree.

A review of the books for errors, misclassified transactions and missing entries before statements go out.

A year-end close, so your tax preparer receives finished numbers instead of a pile of open questions.

Tax planning through the year: estimated tax, and what a big purchase or a good quarter does to what you will owe.

A plain-English walkthrough of the statements, so you know what changed and why.

Coordination with your bookkeeper, payroll and tax return, whether we prepare them or someone else does.

What changes for you

No surprises at tax time

Estimated payments and year-end numbers are worked out during the year, not discovered in March.

Decisions on real numbers

Pricing, hiring and equipment purchases get made with current statements in front of you.

One team behind the numbers

The people producing your statements can also handle the bookkeeping, payroll and tax filings that feed them.

How it works

  1. 1

    Tell us about the business

What you do, how the books are kept today, and what you want the numbers to answer.

  2. 2

    We review what exists

We look at your current books and tell you honestly what needs cleaning up first, if anything.

  3. 3

    We agree on the reports

Which statements you receive, how often, and who you talk to about them.

  4. 4

    Ongoing accounting

Statements, a year-end close and planning conversations on the schedule agreed.

What we ask for to get started

Access to your books
QuickBooks, another accounting system, or spreadsheets. If you have nothing yet, we start with bookkeeping.
Bank and credit card statements
For the period we are reviewing, so the statements can be tied back to the accounts.
Prior-year tax return
If you have one. It shows how the business was reported before.

Questions

What is the difference between accounting and bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping records and reconciles transactions. Accounting takes those records and produces statements, reviews them, and turns them into tax and planning decisions. Most small businesses need both, and we do both.

Do I need bookkeeping before accounting?

Accounting is only as good as the books under it. If yours are behind, we start by getting them current, then move to statements and planning.

Can you work with my existing bookkeeper?

Yes. We can review their work and produce statements from it, and tell you plainly if anything needs to be fixed at the source.

Do you publish accounting prices?

Not yet. The work depends on the size of the business and how clean the books are, so we quote after a short conversation.

Ready to talk about accounting?

Tell us a bit about the business and what you need. A person reads every message, usually within one business day.
